چکیده

1 R ecent Arctic changes are expected to, and may already be, impacting middle latitudes and the rest of the globe. For the first time, the US National Climate Assessment (Melillo et al. 2014) has called attention to a possible role of the Arctic in variations of the jet stream (now referred to as the “polar vortex”) over the contiguous United States (http://nca2014. globalchange.gov/report/our-changing-climate/melting-ice). As evidence of the increased public awareness of this topic, Hamilton and Lemcke-Stampone (2013) have recently reported results showing that a clear majority (60%) of surveyed members of the public now accepts that there is a connection between Arctic warming and mid-latitude weather. Yet the Arctic’s connection with middle latitudes represents a challenge to scientific diagnosis because the forcings and responses of the two regions are intertwined. Hence a key question about Arctic− lower latitude coupling is: What is the forcing and what is the response to Arctic warming?

بررسی نقش گـردش منطقه‌ای جو بر روی خـاورمیانه در وقـوع تـوفان‌های

1- Introduction In middle and lower troposphere, the main control factor of weather and climate over the Middle East is a local to regional scale thermal forcing including forcing from high mountains. In this regard, regional scale atmospheric circulation associated with surface forcing has an important role in the occurrence of summer dust storms over the area. Southwest of Iran experiences a...

What caused the recent “Warm Arctic, Cold Continents” trend pattern in winter temperatures?

The emergence of rapid Arctic warming in recent decades has coincided with unusually cold winters over Northern Hemisphere continents. It has been speculated that this “Warm Arctic, Cold Continents” trend pattern is due to sea ice loss. Here we use multiple models to examine whether such a pattern is indeed forced by sea ice loss specifically and by anthropogenic forcing in general. While we sh...

The Seasonal Atmospheric Response to Projected Arctic Sea Ice Loss in the Late Twenty-First Century

The authors investigate the atmospheric response to projected Arctic sea ice loss at the end of the twentyfirst century using an atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) coupled to a land surface model. The response was obtained from two 60-yr integrations: one with a repeating seasonal cycle of specified sea ice conditions for the late twentieth century (1980–99) and one with that of sea ic...

Amplified Arctic climate change: What does surface albedo feedback have to do with it?

[1] A group of twelve IPCC fourth assessment report (AR4) climate models have Arctic (60N–90N) warmings that are, on average, 1.9 times greater than their global warmings at the time of CO2 doubling in 1%/year CO2 increase experiments. Forcings and feedbacks that impact the warming response are estimated for both Arctic and global regions based on standard model diagnostics. Fitting a zero-dime...

The Role of Ocean–Atmosphere Coupling in the Zonal-Mean Atmospheric Response to Arctic Sea Ice Loss

The role of ocean–atmosphere coupling in the zonal-mean climate response to projected late twenty-firstcentury Arctic sea ice loss is investigated using Community Climate System Model version 4 (CCSM4) at 18 spatial resolution. Parallel experiments with different ocean model configurations (full-depth, slab, and no interactive ocean) allow the roles of dynamical and thermodynamic ocean feedback...
